Indian gangster and politician Atiq Ahmed was born on August 10, 1962, and passed away on April 15, 2023. He was a member of the Samajwadi Party in both the Indian Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Ahmed ran for office from jail and had more than 160 pending criminal charges against him. The Uttar Pradesh Police had seized Ahmed and his family's assets in March 2023, totaling 11,684 crore (US$1.5 billion). In 2019, he was found guilty of kidnapping a witness who testified against him regarding Raju Pal's murder in 2005. Ahmed was incarcerated until he was gunned down on his way to a court-ordered medical checkup on April 15, 2023.

Early and personal life

In 1962, Atiq Ahmed was born to a poor family. In Prayag Raj, his father drove horse-drawn carts.

Shaista Praveen and Ahmed shared a marriage. They had five sons together. Khalid Azim, also known as Ashraf, Ahmed's brother, was a former Samajwadi Party MLA.

Political Career 

When Ahmed ran as an independent for an MLA seat in Prayagraj West in 1989, he got his start in politics. He won the seat in Uttar Pradesh in 1996 as a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), after retaining it in the assembly elections in 1991 and 1993.

Member of Lok Sabha

He left the SP in 1999 to become leader of Apna Dal (Kamera watercourse), where he won the Allahabad West seat in 2002. In 2003, he got back to the SP. Ahmed left his MLA position in Prayagraj in the wake of being chosen for the Lok Sabha seat of Phulpur in 2004.

He was removed from SP in 2007 for giving security to men who had been blamed for assault in a madrasa, which prompted an enormous ruckus.

Atiq Ahmed was permitted to campaign for office in the 2009 Indian general races since he had not been seen as at fault for a wrongdoing. Notwithstanding, he was removed from the Samajwadi Party in 2008, and Mayawati turned him down for a BSP ticket. He then campaigned for office as a contender for the Apna Dal party in Pratapgarh, yet he lost.

Participation from Jail

Ahmed ran for the Allahabad (West) constituency in the Uttar Pradesh elections in 2012 under the banner of the Apna Dal. From jail, he submitted his nomination. In the Allahabad High Court, he tried to get bail, but ten judges said no. Before the elections, he was granted bail and finally heard the case by the eleventh judge. However, Puja Pal, Raju Pal's widow, was awarded the seat.

He joined the Samajwadi Party once more in 2014, and he ran in the national elections for the Shrawasti constituency. He got a quarter of the votes, but the BJP's Daddan Mishra won by nearly 100,000 votes.

Introduction to Crime

By stealing coal from trains and selling it for a profit, Ahmed entered the criminal world. As time went on, this evolved into threatening contractors in order to secure government bids for railroad scrap metal. His most memorable lawbreaker record was in 1979, when he was blamed for homicide in Allahabad. This is where he assembled his wrongdoing organization. He also became the first person in Uttar Pradesh to be arrested under the Gangster Act.

In his initial days, Ahmed worked intimately with other famous individuals from the mafia in Allahabad specifically Chand Baba. Ahmed became known for extortion, kidnapping, and murder after meeting his most formidable rival, Shaukat Ilahi, in 1990.

Raju pal Murder

In 2004, Ahmed left the Allahabad West MLA position to become a SP member and a Phulpur MP. Khalid Azim, his younger brother, ran for office in his place in the by-elections, but he lost to Raju Pal, a BSP candidate. After Raju Pal was shot to death in 2005, Khalid Azim won the subsequent by-elections and won the MLA seat.

In this case, Ahmed was identified as the main accused and was arrested, but he later received bail. Even within the confines of the prison, Ahmed maintained his dominance over the underworld.

She put pressure on him after Mayawati took over as the state's Chief Minister. He gave up and was captured in 2008.

Shuats assault case

Staff members at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture, Technology, and Sciences were allegedly assaulted on December 14, 2016, by Ahmed and his associates for intervening against two students who had been disqualified from taking exams for cheating. On the internet, a lot of people saw the video of Ahmed kicking the SHUATS teacher and other employees. The next day, Ahmed was taken into custody. On February 10, 2017, the Allahabad High Court called the criminal history of Ahmed and furthermore coordinated the Administrator of Police of Allahabad to capture all the blamed for the situation. Ahmed was taken into custody by the police on February 11, and he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Umesh pal Murder

Umesh Pal, a crucial witness who testified against Ahmed in the Raju Pal murder case, was convicted of kidnapping in 2019 and sentenced to death. Umesh Pal was killed in a shooting and bomb attack on February 24, 2023. The main suspect in this murder case was Ahmed. The co-accused included Ahmed's brother Ashraf, son Asad, and associate Guddu Muslim, a bomb maker who allegedly threw the bomb at Umesh Pal and had previous involvement in violent crimes.

In June 2019, Ahmed was transferred to the Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad from the Prayagraj Central Jail.

Death 

Asad, Ahmed's son and wanted in the murder of Umesh Pal, was killed by the Uttar Pradesh Police's Special Task Force (STF) during an encounter in Jhansi on April 13, 2023.

On 15 April 2023, while being accompanied for a court-commanded clinical exam within the sight of police in Allahabad, Ahmed was gotten some information about his nonappearance during his child's last rituals, to which he answered in Hindi, "I wasn't taken, so I didn't go." Atiq Ahmed was shot in the head with a pistol at point-blank range before Ahmed's brother Ashraf could finish his statement, "Main thing is that Guddu Muslim." Atiq Ahmed died as a result. Ashraf Ahmed was likewise killed in the assault, which was caught and communicated real time on TV. At the time of the shooting, police officers were surrounding the brothers. After the murder, the three perpetrators, who had pretended to be members of the media, surrendered rather than attempting to flee. They were recognized and captured.
